My Moment of the week (based on my organisations ridiculously uncreative insistence we have a something of the week. Every week.) Anyway: This one happened during Counter Terrorism Training led by DC Normal from Manchester Constabulary on Monday: DC Normal: Right... Hi everyone, the Home office are making me do this, but what do you all think it is that leads young people to turn to extremism? Everyone: ..............? DC Normal: Right...ok...is it the effect of the internet?....Is it poverty? Is it depravation? (plays a film by Shane Meadows for 20 minutes....) Is it not having a sense of belonging? Yes?....could it be ....foreign policy? Everyone: Yes DC Normal...... Me: I think its domestic policy. DC Normal: Right. Im going to show you a video now from the home office about crime... Me: I think its domestic policy. DC Normal: Ok....go on... Me: Well.... I think that currently domestic policy in the UK will lead to extremism, as just like in France the populist right wing parties have seen the rise of attacks upon ethnic minorites, which may rise to extremism....I think our current domestic policy, which panders to the racist populism of UKIP is dangerous and it could lead to extremism. DC Normal...Good point....Im going to play you a DVD made by The Home Office.......... (We are then subjected to 40 minutes of Day Today Style visuals of 9/11 & 7/7 + various assorted atrocities of terrorist acts,.... the latest of which will be the one that happened two days in Paris after my training, whichll be being added right now to next years DVD that I have to sit through) Greater Manchester Police and DC Normal do a fine job and Im assured that their work every year protects us from the horrible atrocities the like of which have happened in France this week, but can The Home Office please leave GMP and DC Normal alone next year and let them get back to protecting us, so that we can get back to teaching; a lot of that teaching which includes the promotion of E&D and tolerance.
