My Political Statement The recent events and the debate over Syria has causes me to take another long hard look at our country. I fear we have lost the great democracy we wrested from the hands of England. It all began with the establishment of welfare programs. Over the last 75 years these programs have continued to expand until we have now created a dependant welfare class. The politicians have done this intentionally. They know that if the citizens rely on them to keep the checks coming, they will be voted into office again and again. This sets the politicians up as a pseudo royalty. They have used this security to become power brokers who control commercial enterprise through regulations and incentives. The notion of “free enterprise” has been replaced by government sanctioned enterprise. The federal government has long past its constitutional authority. The constitution only allows them to regulate interstate commerce, provide for national defense, and conduct foreign relations and a few other minor duties. All other functions were to be the domain of the states. The intent of the constitution was to create an alliance of independent states. Now we have become a single federal entity and the state’s rights mean little or nothing. During this long and slow grab for power, the federal government has begun to create a police state. In many cities, law abiding citizens are detained and searched with no suspicion of a crime, and the government says it is justified. The NSA and FBI now expend their resources spying on American citizens under the guise of national security. They gather this data in massive databases for use at a later time. Right now there are over 40,000 federal laws which can result in a felony conviction. The average American cannot go one week without breaking at least one of these laws. Too often, the federal government uses this fact to manipulate and coerce its citizens. People don’t dare speak out for fear that the government will come down on them. The federal government is not content with dominating and controlling the states. They also attempt to “bully” foreign entities as well. Prior to World War II the United States tended to mind our own affairs. We did not want to become engaged in another war. We were eventually pulled into WWII and since then have slowly and steadily increased our involvement in foreign affairs. Fast-forward to today and see what we have become. We have a military presence in all corners of the world. We actively facilitate regime changes in countries to suit our objectives. We attempt to intimidate countries which do not comply with our “norms.” And we use our intelligence services to actively manipulate foreign powers. Although I don’t agree with what some countries do, and sometimes those things are disturbing. We need to realize that not everything is our problem. We need to get our house in order before we try to tell others about theirs. I know the community we live in sometimes feels sheltered from these affairs, but we need to pay attention to what is going on in the world around us. The injustices of our government today are or the same caliber that led to the American Revolution.
