The Pole you see is covered with grease and local men climb it to retrieve a Ham pinned at the top. Most of the young men are my neighbours and always put on a great show. The winning team tour local pubs with the Ham and collect substantial amounts of cash from well wishers. A great local tradition peculiar to Irvine. Irvinites from all nations return home at this time and it is well worth a visit.
