My amazingly independent and sassy Aunt Mary is 90 years old and was recently diagnosed with stage four Non-HODGKINS Lymphoma. Metastatic - it was everywhere, spread to her lungs, bones and more. As she called it polka dots all over. The diagnosis was especially regrettable she told me a few months ago because she had just bought new tap shoes. She drives a white PT Cruiser and helps the old people get to the voting booth as a volunteer. She wears hot pink sequined baseball caps and always has a vintage piece of jewelry on her to sell if youre interested and appreciate antiques. She feeds a squirrel she calls lefty and her old cat was named Lena Greenberg Sachs. She is a collector of treasures and well worn trinkets with panache from decades past, softer times, tho life has not been easy. She was terrified of the chemo and could not believe cancer had the nerve to choose her. She takes a baby aspirin every day and a senior silver vitamin. Never ever sick, always in high heels and loves me because I talk straight and am cut from the same cloth as she. This last summer she started the chemo. Her doctor told her that even tho her mind and spirit arent 90 years old, her organs, bones and body still are. She didnt want to, was terrified and I talked her into it, saying that the cancer was an aggressive vine like Morning Glory on steroids, and the Rituxin (chemo) was a machete to keep it at bay. Who knows? Nothing to lose by fighting back, and to use my old motto If I dont like it I can leave. So she did, and she chose the chair that faced the window looking out. Her new friend at the hospital came to sit and keep her company on his lunch hour, brought her tomato soup and Lorna Doon cookies. Her favorite. BeautEEEEEful as she says in her Pennsylvania accent. Well, we just got the news that somehow, some way the scan this week shows that the cancer is GONE. No sign of disease. The doctor must be beside herself. We are all floored. It is truly astonishing at 90 years old, stage four metastatic aggressive cancer. Her goal is to live to be 100. She said she wanted a new pair of converse sneakers, but had put them back because the future didnt warrant spending the money. Now after the news, she is thinking shell get two pair. Hot pink for sure, and maybe Purple. Miracle Mary. #MiracleMary #90yrOldBeatsCancer #kickCancersAss
