My author pals Adele Downs and Onne Andrews tagged me to post the opening three sentences from the first three chapters of my WIP. Here are (unedited) snippets from my upcoming release, Lashwood, coming soon from Elloras Cave Publishing. :) Chapter One “Shall we begin?” Jessamine Gipson shrank into the shadows as the golden god of a man ascended the dais at the front of this horrid den of iniquity where members of the ton and commonwealth alike engaged in the most unspeakable acts. Coming here had been a mistake. Every instinct railed at her to flee but she couldn’t seem to get her feet to move. More importantly, she hadn’t found her sister. Chapter Two “My lord, I told her you were indisposed, but she insists on seeing you.” Ben’s butler, McTavish, dropped his voice to a whisper even though they were the only two in the breakfast room. “Sir, she has your coat.” Ben looked over the top of the Times, his gaze connecting with McTavish’s. “Have her wait in my study.” McTavish had the professionalism not to appear surprised, but Ben knew the man must have been stunned. No one ever called on him in London except for his cousin, Adam. And certainly never any unaccompanied females. Chapter Three Ben wished he’d thought to bring his own pistol, but luckily he knew his driver, McMurtry kept one at all times. A gray pall hung over Commercial Street. The streetlamps had just blazed to life, the brightness of the light having the adverse effect of deepening the shadows in the unlit alleys. East Enders went about their business, heads down, expressions grim as if they’d become accustomed to the fetid stench of sewage and rotted garbage that permeated the air. Down the street, layabouts and vagrants called out to passersby. Harsh cockney voices rose above the din of coach wheels growling on the cobblestones.
