My big brother and I went to pay homage to my maternal grandmother - TopicsExpress

My big brother and I went to pay homage to my maternal grandmother and uncle today at Center Street Cemetery. What our eyes saw was not only appalling, but a complete disrespect to our dead ones. We took a deep pause and began wondering whether Liberia is moving forward or backward! Obviously, our surrounding could not project any trace of progressive indicator because almost all the graves were broken into by unknown criminals. At that moment, anger and disappointment overwhelmed our hearts. We cannot treat our dead ones in such a heartless and insensitive manner. Though they have left us and gone to the great beyond, but we strongly feel they deserve better than what we saw. A lady who we also met at the grave site told us that the display of such reactionary tendency was a direct product of criminals and hooligans. “They usually burst graves to steal steel rods and dig out corpse (bones & skull) for sale to Nigerians and these bones/skulls are used for ritualistic purposes” the lady who prefers anonymity allegedly remarked. When we heard this terrible news, we quickly reflected on our deadly history of senseless bloodletting. Fellow citizens, it is time to vigorously protect our dead ones from criminals, because it could be all of us tomorrow. We commend the government for fencing center street cemetery, but we need to go beyond fencing and ensure maximum respect and protection for our precious jewels who have left tears in our eyes and pains in our hearts. Therefore, we want to call on the central command team of madam Sirleaf to immediately intervene by engendering a “National Consultative Conference for the Protection of Dead People” that would eventually lead to a comprehensive policy document to deter enemies of the dead from intruding into their resting place! I am addressing a press conference on plethora of critical national matters this coming Friday and I am going to highlight this issue because it is germane to the sustainability of our young democracy. May God help this country to experience a new beginning of inclusive change. Mental, economic, social, and political freedom is an imperative!
