My brother Phil and his wife Amanda are two of the more gracious - TopicsExpress

My brother Phil and his wife Amanda are two of the more gracious people anyone could have the fortune of knowing. It was discussed through the family that when I would have this surgery I would be pretty much without the ability to get around. Only one arm is working fully. My sister Margo exclaimed that I am a pretty private man. I dont tell people when I am attempting to figure out how to move through a problem until the problem is solved. In this case, she said, this could cause me to do more damage to an already sewn up injured shoulder. Not something I would benefit from, my big sister reasoned with me. Once a big sister, always a big sister. As I live in a beautiful out in the country home, none the less, a home without the benefit of kids running around, or someone who could check on me throughout the day except a friend or three stopping by, my brother and sister-in-law decided to invite me to make their home my home for this interval. They have made their guest bedroom my new command center where I can still consult with my students, write my stories and study books about subjects I have been wanting to learn but didnt have the time to get to. Right out the side door of this quest room is an out door weight room my nephew Delaney set up. It is a reminder that shortly I will return to working my strength back up. I have noticed something about my body. I am an athlete. I have been my whole life. Ive noticed that over the past few days I have experienced very little pain, even out of surgery. I didnt have nor need pain medication the day after they did the cutting. I asked the nurses about this and they said that it a common experience for athletes to experience high pain thresholds. Next to no pain. On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the arm is cut off and 1 being a pin prick, I am at a 2. I have been reading Ageless Body Timeless Mind by Deepak Chopra, and in it he cites a scientific study designed to help understand this phenomena. Scientist noted that athletes have far higher pain thresholds than those who do not move their bodies rigorously. A theory was created that the body creates its own pain medication when working out. To determine if this theory was true, scientist selected two groups of participants. Serious athletes and those who remain sedate throughout their days. Pain thresholds were established for both groups by pricking them with pins. The scientists then took blood from athletes and transfused it into the non athletes. They then inflicted the pin pricks into the non athletes and discovered that, like the athletes, their pain thresholds jumped up. They suddenly experienced far less pain. Dr Chopra reiterated that the reason this occurred is because when one is moving the body rigorously the body releases a complex and powerful series of pleasure inducing chemicals, more powerful than morphine into the blood and therefore into the nerves, turning off the pain sensors and replacing them with pleasurable experiences. I normally dont do selfies, like the one here. Occasionally I will have someone take a picture of me when I am starting a new adventure, like Natural Horsemanship, long distance cycling or competing in the Martial Arts. I am a story teller and I find that when I share the accompanying photo of myself doing the activity I am describing it adds to the entertainment value of the story. However, I wanted to post this photo of me taken yesterday just to assure my friends (and myself) that even though I havent been working out much since October, the month of the accident, I am in great shape, relatively speaking. I will be ready for the Coast to Coast 3,000 Mile End Polio Now Challenged Athletes Foundation Bike Tour next April. If you would like to read about my 900 Mile End Polio Now Bike Tour finished last October, the book, Moving Fast Sitting Still is available for purchase in electronic form. If you have an Apple device I suggest that you get the iTune version with the color photos on nearly every page. movingfastsittingstill.net. If you wish for a paper back with black and white photos, my editor/designer is finishing it up. It should be ready in two weeks. Thanks for your patience. Thank you for all your good wishes, warm thoughts and kind prayers. I feel fortunate to have so many good friends.
