Thanks, Rashmi A new kind of MP for a new kind of India Your first encounter with Phiroze Palkhivala, the AAP candidate for North Central Mumbai (Bandra East & West, Kalina, Kurla, Chandivali, and Vile Parle) may leave you puzzled. Cycling to the High Court, in his crisp white shirt, his ‘outer space’ mask and a biker’s helmet over his bald head; he makes an anachronistic picture. But there you have him… a political candidate with a difference. Other MPs may clamour for the privilege of ‘laal batti gaadis’, “but if I get elected I am definitely going to cycle into parliament.” says Mr. Palkhivala, who is passionate about the environment. An astute lawyer, an aficionado of Indian classical music, an environmentalist at heart, a philosopher in spirit, an inveterate explorer of new terrain, a perennial champion of the underdog; Phiroze is not your average MP. In fact, Phiroze Palkhivala never expected to be in politics. Till the AAP appeared on the scene, politics was not a space for clean-thinking, high-minded citizens. Thankfully, we now have a platform for the ‘aam aadmi’ who is socially minded and wants to devote his energy to the good of the nation. An inspiring amalgam of intellect and heart, Mr. Palkhivala, by all accounts, will make a very effective MP. He has an incisive mind that is able to cut straight to the core of any issue, the burning passion to do what is right, and the desire to make a difference. Inherently deeply spiritual, he is at the same time a dynamic man of action. Able to reach decisions quickly, he is also blessed with the capacity to get things done. Rational, articulate and expressive, his words emanate from the deep truth of his convictions. His words and actions ring with this truth, and therefore inspire deep loyalty and trust in people around him. Nephew of Sri Nani Palkhivala, who fought relentlessly for the rights of the country through the dismal period of the emergency, and had the moral courage to speak when all the voices of reason in the country had been silenced, Phiroze has inherited the same genes. His integrity and idealism make him stand apart from the rest and he is never afraid to speak up for what is right. Having held back for so long with no candidate fielded in this constituency, the AAP seem to have got it right with their choice of Phiroze Palkhivala. Here’s a candidate who seems incorruptible, proactive, secular and progressive. Only time will tell whether he will be able to deliver, given the present political scenario, but considering the general calibre of our representatives, he definitely signals a refreshing change and the hope for a better tomorrow. Phiroze Palkhivala will be touring extensively in his constituency, meeting citizens and discussing issues of concern. Make sure you catch him as he visits your locality.
