My brothers, Many troops of Saint George all over the country are kicking off with their first campout this September. First, I have a favor to ask. Please, please, please take some AWESOME photos. I want to feature yall on our new snazzy website which is being developed right now. iPhone photos are no good. Get a dad (or older boy) who has a high def high megapixal camera with a great lens to shoot photos. And if you can, capture some hi-def video footage. We can’t wait to show photos of our Mass, campfire, and activities. 5 Tips for a Great First Camp Out! 1) Plan ahead for food and snacks. Boys eat a lot. They will be busy. 2) Bring tons of water. Yes, I know. It’s cooler to boil your water from a muddy stream. It’s still hot in September (even for our Australian brothers). Keep everybody hydrated. 3) Ban matches and lighters (except for camp stoves) if you’re daring. Make it a challenge. It’s not cold enough to risk your life yet. 4) Plan a major activity for the Saturday in the campout. If you have older scouts, let them spearhead this, but give them some guidance because there will be new dads and sons who have never done this before. Saturday activities could be a planned hike, clearing a wooded area for a chapel (that’s what we’re doing), making a wooden bridge, capture the flag, a father-son baseball game with bats and a tennis ball (won’t need gloves), or a knife safety class followed by a whittling contest “Who can carve the coolest looking stick?” 5) Make the Saturday night campout special with skits, songs, poems (from memory), jokes, or a saint’s story. Set up a large stump near the fire. Have the boys stand in line. When it’s each boys turn to say a joke or tell a story, he gets to stand on the stump – like stage. Otherwise, you’ll have a dozen boys speaking over each other. Please leave a comment below with more ideas! It’s going to be a FUN September for the dads and sons of Saint George!
