My childhood memories of Christmas would include shopping in Woolworths on the Heathway or a trip to Romford on the bus to look at the bigger shops and the market. Admiring the toys on offer on the shelves of the shops and getting very excited. Food shopping would be done at our local parade of shops, the butchers, bakers and greengrocers. The build up to the day would include my mam making sausage rolls and mince pies ready for the Christmas Day tea to go with the turkey sandwiches. What the hell has happened. Watching the news last night was a segment on people in the country shopping entirely online. They showed a woman and her two children staring at a computer screen choosing presents and footage of endless delivery vans on our roads. A woman Gary knows has ordered her childrens main presents online and they havent arrived..... Oops. Then came Boxing Day. A day when you sat and watched some TV, children played with their toys, saw some relatives and relaxed. Now, for a large number of people, its getting to the sales, dragging their kids with them or shopping online for more stuff which results in moaning and groaning for the next 6 months about their credit card bills. STOP Christmas can be simple and relaxing. Two days of enjoyment to be remembered in years to come. We dont need rum butter, brandy flavoured cream, enough frozen finger food to feed an army, sixteen varieties of crackers for 10 varieties of cheese, five pudding choices, twenty birds stuffed inside each other served with ham, beef and a veggie option (did they exist in my childhood). Do we enjoy it more now? All we need is a turkey roast dinner (like it or not its only one day) Christmas pudding, crackers, a small tea in the evening and some decent TV (now thats the most difficult thing to find on our 100+ channels) and a relaxing Boxing Day. KEEP CALM and have a stress free Christmas...... Now wheres that list of must have crap;-)
