My clinical supervisor said something wise today. Plato talked about when people lived in caves and lit fires to see their way around. When they lit the fire they saw their shadows reflected and thought the shadow was a real person, they became attached to these shadows. Often in social work we think people need to move into the light out of the cave and away from the shadows of low self esteem, addictions and bad relationships, but its a process. Moving people into the sunlight too soon will blind them and they will just go back to the cave and the shadow.
