My column in todays Times is on Wenger and this specialist in failure label. Despite the very obvious arguments, I disagree with it. Failing to win the Premier League cant be described as outright failure when you have the fourth-biggest budget -- provided that you compete. Arsenal are now in a position to compete for the title along with Chelsea, Man City and perhaps an improving Liverpool. If they fall short -- particularly narrowly short -- it will be hugely frustrating for their fans, but I wouldnt call it failure. The same with Chelsea, actually, since theyre rebuilding (albeit with the ability to buy £15m/£20m for the bench). Mourinho is right about that. Hes wrong about Wenger and Arsenal, though, which is not entirely surprising. The danger is that others take a similarly one-eyed look at Wengers record if his team come up short over the crucial weeks ahead. thetimes.co.uk/tto/sport/columnists/kay/article4006320.ece (subs)
