My conversation history today with a Yoruba citizen from Lagos: Deola: Just got to the shop Grandson: What are the things you sell? Deola: Baby things, kitchen utensils and gifts Grandson: Where do you get them from? Deola: Eko Idumota Grandson: You buy in wholesale and sell in retail? Deola: Yes. Nigeria is a good environment for business. Thats what you people abroad dont understand Grandson: But Nigeria is too expensive Deola: Too expensive for people that only visit and dont have anything doing here. People do businesses here and buy houses abroad. Grandson: So tell me how much is your profit after tax? Deola: Hehe Grandson, do you know that in Lagos Island, the only person that brings in (import) quality unbreakable plates is Savico? Grandson: Why would the government gives only one person import licence to import unbreakable plates? Deola: One day I went to market, the Ibo were having meeting and no gree open shops Grandson: And what happened? Deola: Savico is an Ibo. Believe it I didnt see quality unbreakable plates buy that day. I was so angry. They wanted an Ibo to be the Chairman of the market. The Yoruba no gree. Grandson: Really? Deola: Yep Grandson: So they had an Ibo as Chairman? Deola: I dont think so. But since then I have been thinking why would only Ibo and one man for that matter be the only one selling unbreakable plates in Lagos Island, Yorubaland. Grandson: And where was this market? Deola: Gorodom at Ebute Ero, Adeniji Grandson: Gorodom what? Deola: We call it Gorodom (drum) at Adeniji. They sell household and kichen things there. Grandson: So there is no single Yoruba selling unbreakable plates? Deola: Except from Savico Grandson: In the whole of Lagos? Deola: Yep. I mean importing. Yoruba no get money na. Ibo can do anything for money. Armed robbery, 419, bank robbery, kidnapping, child trafficking. Grandson: 85% of all crimes in Yorubaland is committed by the Ibo. Deola: Na u sabi. We allowed them now. The above was the conversation I had today with one of my friend from Facebook. It shows that Yoruba Youths are now thinking towards the future and asking fundamental questions. The lady was cofused as to why one man in the whole of Lagos will be the sole importer of unbreakable plate. She was more confused that the only man is an Ibo in a predominantly Yoruba-speaking society. She also appreciated the fact that majority of the Ibo can afford the capital intensive business of importation of goods because of their recourse to criminal activities to raise fund for their business. This kind of conversation shows that the Yoruba Youths are getting our message. There is need to protect and safeguard the welfare and interests of the Yoruba people first in Yorubaland before others.
