My dad started farming in 1948, we grew our own food, all organic. We had a big garden, raised hogs, chickens, & had a milk cow. We fertilized the garden with manure-had plenty, slaughtered a hog or two every winter & cured the meat with some sort of salt rub. Each spring dad would order a hundred baby chickens & they would arrive by mail, cost was $3.00 for 100 chicks. These was for food, didnt have to cure or cann, slaughted when needed. A hog killing usually involved neighbors & family, would slaughter 2 or 3 hogs at a time. The kids got to help scrape the hair off & the older kids got to render the lard, in a large iron kettle. We grew our own food, meat, milk & butter, about the only things we bought was flour, cornmeal, sugar, tea, & coffee. And the best thing of all was, my mom was a great cook, everything was made from scratch, she even made our syrup for pancakes-sugar & water.
