My dads brother: “On the 9th of August, 1944, Brettville was under attack. The German troops had taken the canton (village) and were positioned in slit trenches. The Calgary Highlanders were attacking and the leading section was subjected to heavy machine gun and rifle fire. Lance Corporal Wilfred Matthew Bruce Cook, a Bren gunner, in spite of the terrific fire, dashed and crawled forward over the open ground, exchanging bursts of fire with the enemy. When a few yards from the enemy trench, he stood up and firing his Bren gun from the hip, rushed the position. His daring action completely demoralized the enemy and one officer and 5 other soldiers were taken prisoner. This soldier’s disregard for his own safety and his exceptional courage were an inspiration to his comrades and helped the battalion to swiftly reach their objective.” He died of injuries on August 19, 1944.
