My dear friend and editor extraordinaire is offering a writing workshop at the JCC in St. Paul called Befriending the Writing Process. I recommend it for those wanting to dig into writing more seriously. In this two-part workshop, we’ll enter the stages of the writing process: generation, revision, and editing, and determine which writing muscles we need to strengthen. We’ll identify our inner censor and inner critic, learn ways to outwit writers’ block, notice when we enjoy and when we resist writing, and discuss what it means to serve our writing. We’ll entertain questions such as How do I get started? What do I do when I’m stuck? What do I do when my writing goes “off track”? How do I know when a piece of writing is finished? When does it matter what other people think about my writing? We’ll write together and read our work aloud (if we choose) in an atmosphere of relaxed exploration. All levels of writers welcome. Bring a notebook and pen (or two) and come prepared to write. Sunday, September 7th and Sunday, September 21st. 2:00-4:15. $50 for both sessions. She earned her M.F.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Minnesota, where she also taught creative writing. In addition, she has taught literature and writing at the University of St. Thomas, the Loft Literary Center, a homeless shelter, and a Zen Center. Since 2012, she has taught the Monday morning creative writing class at the St. Paul JCC started by Patricia Hampl 40 years ago. She lives with her family in Minneapolis.
