My doctor started me on some recreational therapy for my chronic - TopicsExpress

My doctor started me on some recreational therapy for my chronic neck and shoulder pain after breaking my neck & my first class is swim rec but after talking to the counselor for recreational therapy Ive found they have quite a few different programs for all types of issues for veterans. Whether it be from getting skills to focus or readjust to being in group settings they have guitar classes that once you finish you get a free brand new guitar at the end, craft workshops, and where Im at they have kayaking, fly fishing, adaptive salsa dancing (to accommodate for disabilities) and Im sure there are a few others that Ive missed. Once I complete the swim rec my doctor will have me start yoga. The VA is even now offering acupuncture to help with pain to help find pain treatment alternatives for many of us that dont react well to narcotic pain meds. Like myself....I can take a hand full of oxy & it does very little for me to treat the pain because my liver processes medication differently than other peoples do.... Im a genetic anomaly. The road to getting better is sometimes a long & bumpy & winding road but we can find our way through the labyrinth if we continue to keep searching for programs that will help us heal. Ask questions & seek answers. Get the treatment we all deserve. Im telling you about these programs because many of us dont know about these hidden little programs within the VA. They can really be useful & encouraging. Especially to someone with PTSD because those of us that struggle with PTSD, as you know, have tendency to disconnect from the world & that is one of the worst things for us to do. We need to remember who we are & who we were & how we can become a part of our communities again. If you know of other programs the VA offers that others may not know about list them here. Programs that might have helped you with chronic pain, depression, reconnecting, recreation, anything like that. -RedRum
