My family are my family, even when they dont act like it, I cant just walk out on them. I must passionately love my family in spite of their imperfections. They may disappoint me and let me down, but thats no excuse to stop loving them. People become disillusioned with their family for many understandable reasons. The list could be quite long: Insult, hurt, hypocrisy, neglect, conspiracy, pettiness, etc. Rather than being shocked and surprised, I must keep remembering that family is made up of imperfect people, including myself. If family must be perfect to satisfy me, that same perfection will exclude me from membership, because Im not perfect. The sooner I give up the illusion that family must be cool in order to love it, the sooner I quit pretending and start admitting were all at fault and need grace. Besides, there are no perfect family to escape to. Every family has its own set of weaknesses and problems. Conflict is usually the first sign that focus has shifted to less important issues. Divorcing my family is a mark of immaturity; longing for the ideal while criticizing the real is evidence of immaturity. Maturity is living with the tension! Reconciliation, not running away, is the road to a stronger character.
