My father left this earthly world on Monday July 29, 2013. My sister Lori wrote a very nice tribute to him.. Thank you Lori. The following is a tribute to my Dad. In 1987 I did a drawing of his work shoes. This reflections of his life and the drawing. With Teri Taylor Lisa Kirk Heckmann Scotty Kirk My Father’s Shoes These are not just any old shoes, but my father’s shoes. The man who wore these shoes was a man of faith, character and pride. The man who wore these shoes grew up on the family farm, one of 7 boys and 7 girls. He learned the value of a hard day’s work. He attended a one room country school just down from the homestead. Always grateful for what God had given. The man who wore these shoes provided for his family. He worked hard to build a business that had his name on the building. He provided service and honesty to his customers and got them on the road again. He was a good ol’ Dodge boy. He believed in doing a job right. And he would gladly tell why he did what he did. Humble was he. He called them the way he saw them, giving credit where credit was due. He was sharp man with Irish blood. He had the ability to give clear, concise, details instructions. The man who wore these shoes gave to his family, community and country and the good of others. He was a man who earned respect by the way he lived his life. For the love of the game, he was always cheering for the Cubbies. He was a constant supporter of his own ball team of nine, four boys and five girls. He took delight in watching his grandchildren play, enjoying their accomplishments. He was known for saying, “Watch the ball hit the bat.” The man who wore these shoes was true to his commitment of love, in hard times and happiness. He was blessed with his bride for more than 60 years. He would tell you that marriage is about give and take and a whole lot of “yes dears.” Together they were a great example of what love is, giving to one another and putting each other first. The man that wore these shoes loved to tinker with his 2 old cars, polish them up and take them for ride. He learned to chase that white ball around and picked up a few along the way. He enjoyed a cold one and the company of friends. The man that wore these shoes accepted the cross he was given. Even at the hour of his greatest need he was still looking out for his family, concerned for their welfare. These are not just anyone shoes but my father’s shoes. A man we admire for his wisdom, laughter, character and faith. He gave us all a great gift, by being our dad. In these well-worn shoes He competed well, He finished the race and He kept the faith. The boss has now had his last dish of ice cream and his shoes are off and we say our good byes. We raise our heads high as he looks down on us with love. With love to my Dad, Lori
