My father spent time on the trail during his military service. He was very proud of the opportunity, which influenced my decisions to join in 2003. Having had a Drill Sgt as a father, I had a little bit of working knowledge on how to keep from really getting into shit… Including NEVER touching the Drill Sgts campaign cover. During my time in basic training there was a private in my platoon that excelled at being a blue falcon. What he lacked in intestinal fortitude and common sense, he tried to make up by sucking up to our Plt and Assistant Drill Sgts. This usually pissed them off enough to smoke the whole platoon, so we were getting sick of his shit quickly. About two-three weeks into our training, Private B relieved me on fire watch around 2200hrs. About 5 minutes after I hit the rack, the CQ Drill Sgt. came through for headcount. After leaving, Private B came running around the corner in a panic saying Guys, the Drill Sgt left his hat on the fire watch desk.. What should I do?! I dont know what compelled me, but I immediately responded Take it to him… Private B grabbed the campaign hat and ran out of the bay. 50 minutes later he returned, out of breath and soaked in sweat. He told us that when he caught up with the Drill Sgt, he immediately snatched the cover away and smoked the hell out of Private B for the rest of the hour. When told to recover, Drill Sgt told him Dont ever put your nasty dick skinners on my hat again. Ft. Sill
