My father told me that Wing Chun is a fighting method. With that - TopicsExpress

My father told me that Wing Chun is a fighting method. With that being said, every martial art in China has both fighting and internal training methods. The purpose of internal training is to improve health, train the breathing (Qi), and develop internal power. So if you train both, like I do, this skill is called Ngoi Leui Gim Sau. Many people only train the fighting part of the art. They are not making themselves a complete martial artist. Some people like to argue whether Wing Chun is an internal or an external art. If you like to think it’s internal, then say it’s internal—if you like to say its external, then say it’s external. Different people have different accomplishments within the art based on their experiences, skill level and their attitude towards the art. I believe that if you can reach a level of Ngoi Leui Gim Sau you will have cultivated Qi, which can add to the power of your techniques. Thus, we don’t really need big and powerful muscles. When speaking about internal, there are two aspects to be considered: (1) improving health and (2) correct use/positioning of the bones, muscles, joints, powering, etc. Nowadays, many people only know about the external ways through partner training/fighting and don’t fully understand the way the body is changing on the inside. This may give what they are doing the appearance of Wing Chun, but in fact, they have lost the micro-movements and the internal concepts that it has. -- Spread of our cover interview with Sifu Wong Nim Yi from the upcoming Issue No. 20.
