My favorite Dylan periods have always been the 66 tour with The Band (covered in The Bootleg Series Vol. 4), the Rolling Thunder Tour (Bootleg Series Vol. 5) and the Basement Tapes era (now getting a well-deserved treatment with a massive Bootleg Series vol.11 offering). Theres something just magical about this period: the transformation of Dylan from a leather-clad, amphetamine fueled rock Rimbaud who was rumored dead from a motorcycle wreck to an upstate NY clean-cut family man; the obscurity and range of the folk, pop, blues and country songs played, showcasing Dylans anthropological appreciation of musical tradion, as well as providing a blueprint for how he created his own past & subsequent work (and how Robbie Robertson and The Band would approach their own songwriting after this period of edification), not to mention it being the story of the first bootleg and a beloved low-fi recording long before low-fi was hip. Most of all, it was a group of friends partying and goofing off & at the same time, making some great music. This format inspired countless loose and dirty, party vibe style albums, with the Stones Exile on Main Street being an obvious choice. Take a listen to 900 Miles From My Home, one of 30 never released tracks from this box set. Cant wait to hear the whole thing!
