My favorite Medieval battle was the Battle of Crecy, fought on my birthday, Aug 26, in the year 1346. Today Ive discovered two new Crecy Veterans from whom I descend via my great-grandmother, Mary E. Crockett. The first is Sir Henry, 1st Lord Scrope. He was warden of Calais and Guisnes, Privy Councilor, Warden of the West March, Steward of the Household. He was knighted at the Siege of Berwick in May 1333. He served under the Earl of Northampton in Scotland. He fought at the Battle of Halidon Hill on 20 July 1333. He took part in King Edward IIIs invasion of Scotland in 1335 and was present at the siege of Dunbar, Jan-Aug 1338. He was at the Battle of Sluys on 24 June 1340 and at the Siege of Tournai June 1341. He served in Brittany in 1342, being present at the Siege of Vannes and in 1344 at the Siege of Morlaix. He fought at the Battle of Crecy 26 Aug 1346 and the Battle of Nevilles Cross 17 Oct 1346. From there he was at the Siege of Calais 1346-47. He was appointed a commissioner to treat with the Scots for the ransom of King David II during 1351-1353. The 2nd is Sir John de Grey, a founding knight of the Order of the Garter. He fought in Scotland in 1327, and 1335 and in France 1342-1346. In Jan 1332 he had a quarrel with William la Zouche Mortimer, 1st Lord Zouche and drew his knife on him in the Kings presence. He was committed to prison and sought pardon in March of 1332. He fought at Crecy in the 2nd division. He was a founder knight of the Order of the Garter. Scropes coat of arms is azure, a bend or (blue with a gold diagonal stripe. The 2nd is Greys coat of arms.
