My first midget race was the Night Before the 500 in a 32 Curtis Offy. The owners, two brothers from Indy, arrived late, missed practice, missed qualifying. Shim Malone let me start in the back of a heat just to get some experience. Did I mention 32 Curtis Offy? Right from a museum...ha not really but should have been. Id give whatever for a film of that night. I was the best comedic act of the night. Smoke was coming off my helmet as I was laid over in the seat and it was rubbing the right rear...what an intro for a road racer. Ran it once more a Columbus and I think Jimmy Caruthers lapped me four or five times. Ha! What a show, think I was paid $10 for the experience.
