My free time the last few days... 1. My wife Terri Spears Motley bought an inexpensive used netbook. 2. It was very sluggish and gave script errors on numerous websites. 3. I checked for updates to the Ubuntu operating system and it showed about 130 updates. 4. I tried to run the updater but it required a root password that I didnt know. 5. I researched how to figure out the root password but instead guessed at the password... and got it right on the first guess. It was the same as the username. 6. I changed the root password, ran the updater, and it installed the 130+ updates. 7. After a reboot, it still gave script errors on Facebook. 8. I checked the Update Manager and it now said there were 432 updates available. 9. I decided what the heck and set it to do all of the updates. 10. It errored out part of the way through when it ran out of disk space... thus corrupting several of the update packages. 11. It also corrupted the wireless adapter software so I couldnt connect wirelessly. 12. I tried connecting with an Ethernet cable but that didnt work either. 13. After many hours of frustration, I decided to install updated Ubuntu OS from a USB drive... not enough disk space. 14. I then tried Lubuntu (a streamlined version of Ubuntu) and success! But sadly, my wired/wireless wouldnt work still. 15. Swapped Ethernet cable for another one and I could connect to internet! (Kicks self for not trying that earlier.) Still no wireless so this little netbook of little to no value to me. 16. Googled how to fix wireless adapter on Lubuntu OS, ran the terminal commands, and bingo! Connected to my wireless network immediately. 17. Mary Motley tells me she cannot view videos on Facebook. 18. I Google how to update/install flashplugin, run the terminal commands, and bingo! 19. Plugged in and closed lid on netbook. 20. Cracked open a cold one in celebration.
