My friend Alice says: I often begin my survey class, Indigenous Peoples of North America, by showing this clip of Oneida stand up comic Charlie Hill on the Richard Pryor Show, 1977. First I have to tell students that its okay to laugh - hes trying to be funny. Then I ask, why are the jokes so fresh (for them)? Almost 40 years have passed. Students may learn a few more facts about Native Americans but mainly as curiosities of US history rather than as an intrinsic part.
