My friend Jim DiMiero asked me to list 10 books Ive read in life that really stuck with me. Its a tough assignment, and Im sure other titles will occur to me. But, off the top of my head -- and in the order I read them: The Cat in the Hat: My favorite Dr. Seuss from childhood because of the anarchy. Love reading it to my own kids. Ball Four: Forever changed my view of baseball - and its players - when I was 15. The Selling of the President: Did the same, with politics. Grapes of Wrath: Probably the only assigned book in high school that I read well before the deadline. Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: Started reading as a teenager. Still pick it up once a year or so. Paper Lion: Made me want to be a sports writer. Serpentine: One of the best true-fact-novels ever. Written by an author (Thomas Thompson) who died just as his career was taking off. Bonfire of the Vanities: My favorite novel. Also, my least-favorite movie. Elements of Style: A book that actually teaches you how to write. The Universal Baseball Association, Harry J. Waugh, Proprietor: For a lifelong baseball fan and board-game junkie, this strangely written book really connected. Two books Ive read this year -- Bill Brysons: One Summer, America, 1927; and Laura Hillenbrands: Unbroken -- may make my list down the road. Actually, Brysons book, Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid, comes in as Number 11. Im not challenging anyone - I finished doing that with ice water - but feel welcome to make your own list or just throw a title or two at the end of this.
