My friend Point, on the left, (legal name William Hatfield) died on Friday. He was hunting with a friend, and said I think Im having a heart attack and died. His name was Point because that was his name in Vietnam. On jungle recon, he was the point, the tip of the spear, the place of danger - and he loved it. It made him a man, and it destroyed him. He fought throat cancer for six years (he said from Agent Orange) and beat it. How do you sit Shiva for a brother a thousand miles away? How do you sing songs of lamentations? Memories: 1} Point and I had girlfriends who lived in the same government housing unit - I remember waiting for them to get off shift, and Point and I passing a flask and joint, solving problems of the Universe; 2) Point and I decided we wanted to pull the ton -100 MPH on our motorcycles - he on a Harley, me on a Triumph - in to Yankee Jim Canyon scared the shit out of me, but left Point smiling; 3} Point dancing as the nucleus in our Amoeba Dance at 3:00 AM at Meri Berberets place to Sympathy For the Devil - Rolling Stones - the neighbors were pissed; 4) nobody danced in the coals like Point. Point was a good man - shit this sucks!
