My friend Varsha is doing something bold to help others. Ill let her explain what she is doing but she is a young lady that I think is determined to be a light in the world--read on to hear her story. Last spring, I started a new student organization at my college(Smith College, Northampton, MA) called Global Medical Brigades (GMB). GMB is the largest student-led international development organization that works to bring accessible healthcare to rural communities in Ghana, Panama, Honduras and Nicaragua. Many of the communities that they work with have no access to basic health care other than through GMB’s efforts. I have always wanted to participate in a medical mission trip such as this so I decided to bring a chapter of the organization to my college campus and recruit my classmates to join me in planning a trip. On these trips, college students set up week long mobile health clinics and are able to see hundreds of community members under the guidance of recruited U.S health professionals. I am excited to say that we are currently in the process of planning a brigade to Panama from January 17-23, 2015. In preparation for the trip, our group has to fund-raise money to purchase medicine that we will collect in the U.S. and bring to our community in Panama.
