My friend back in college days Ha Do Bac nominated me for the Book - TopicsExpress

My friend back in college days Ha Do Bac nominated me for the Book Bucket Challenge, so here it is I am nominating Alisha Elizabeth Olivia Nguyen Nick Ramirez Brittney Rigby and Jas Pham Tran 1. The Catcher in the Rye - J D Salinger: my first serious novel that I read back to back, back in college days. I do have a copy at home, should have a reread one day. It was a wonderful treatise on cynicism and love that accompany growing up. 2. Of Mice and Men - John Steinbeck: Short but sharp, it was a very moving book about brotherly love, of two people who are not actually brothers but having to be with each other due to the push and pull of the Great Depression. My favourite Steinbecks book. 3. Catch 22 - Joseph Heller: Funny but really, really hard to get the first time around, in fact I must do another reading soon. It is absurd, mind-bending, and candid. 4. The Prince - Niccolo Machiavelli: A realist, as posterity labelled him, a very short piece that fleshed out what it takes to rule and survive. It can be morally disturbing at times, but it is a highly reflective piece. 5. The Art of War - Sun Tzu: A highly relevant treatise on strategy, on the battlefield and elsewhere. 6. The Third Wave: Democratization in the Late Twentieth Century - Samuel P Huntington: My first book that I more or less have a thorough read, it has been the basis of my intellectual inquiry into development 7. Why Nations Fail - Daron Acemoglu and James Robinson: A book which I am yet to finish, but it is a very intellectually stimulating book, with beautifully crafted arguments and amazing historical insights. A wonderful read on development 8. The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything - James Martin, SJ: Another unfinished book which influenced my spiritual life significantly, of knowing God, and your relationship with God 9. Don Camillo - Giovannino Guareschi: One of the most hillarious piece of humour, a wonderful tale of a love-hate relationship between two people who are ideologically so far apart, yet somehow close to each other beneath all of the posturings 10. Chuyện Trạng - assorted authors: hillarious at times, serious at others, and all very reflective, the exploits of individuals who aced the Imperial examinations, and people who are regarded as such without any official qualifications, have been highly entertaining and useful, and these stories arguably set me on the path that I am today.
