My garden is seldom pretty, and not everything I try makes a decent crop. But its always worth the time. Organic and natural methods are inherently inexpensive. Watering can be minimized, even in droughty Lawton summers by prepping beds deeply, adding as much compost as you can, and mulching . You dont have to use chemical fertilizers, even on the neediest plants. Legume cover crops or well prepared manures provide nitrogen, as does a good compost. Potassium makes up a big fraction of the soil in the area of the Wichita mountains ( clays.org/journal/archive/.../8-1-1.p) Phosphate seems to be the hardest macronutrient to get around here, but Id youre not squeamish, bone meal its a fairly inexpensive option, but you need to apply It about twice a season, if your soil is lacking. Rock phosphate persists much longer, but Its been hard for me to find. Good additions of compost from varied and balanced ingredients go a long way to a balanced and healthy soil. Not everyone can double dig, or cull the town for compost additions, but everyone can have a garden, even if its small. With a little care, even with the most modest of resources, you can grow a surprising amount of useful food, even if its just herbs for seasoning, or edible flowers in a pot. Even in this small way, youre minimizing your carbon footprint, and learning the basics of home food production.
