My good friend Howard Bloom was in the Orange Bowl on Jan. 2, 1984 for the Miracle in Miami. We once had occasion to riff about this historic college football game during a dull moment on a Ravens basketball webcast. Most people have said Tom Osborne was correct to go for the two-point conversion and an undefeated-untied season. I disagree. Kicking the PAT for a 31-31 tie still would have left the Nebraska Cornhuskers as the only unbeaten major college team that season. The Nos. 2 and 4-ranked teams had lost and No. 3 Auburn did not have a convincing bowl win (9-7 over Michigan). It would have been an unpopular decision, but the Huskers would have still won a split vote. Analysis has also shown Miami shouldnt have been champion. Auburn had a much stronger case. Miami also didnt deserve to be co-champs in 1991, either. https://youtube/watch?v=JK66agxGheQ
