My grandfather served our country during the Second World War as a signalman aboard a Royal Canadian Navy corvette. His individual bravery played a part in protecting merchant convoys from roving wolfpacks of U-boats, and in making sure that the meat and potatoes from our farmers’ fields and ranches got across the Atlantic to relieve the privation of a Britain under siege. His courage, and that of so many other Canadian men and women in uniform during those six dark years of our history, made the landings at Juno Beach on D-Day, this very day in 1944, possible. It made the liberation of Western Europe possible. It made the scouring and the erasure of the unspeakable evil of Nazi Germany from the face of this planet possible. We Greens won’t shy away from our obligations to the defence of the realm. But neither will we blindly throw our sailors, soldiers, and air crews into harm’s way. Our duty as Alberta members of our Green Party of Canada to our friends and neighbours, and to the all too many valiant men and women who laid down their lives in sacrifice to our country, is to shine light where there is darkness in this world. It is to strengthen this peaceable kingdom, to build this just and sustainable nation together. It is to bring hope to people in despair; to bring justice to people under the yoke; to bring help to people in distress. It is to extend our hands to those of our adversaries who seek out the wisdom of effective resolution to our conflicts — and to show them the folly of awakening dragons. Over the next four days, you have the opportunity to keep the defence of the core values that are the sacred trust of your Green Party of Canada in the steady hand of an Alberta representative to your Federal Council who has the experience, the leadership, the foresight, and the insight to work hard and work vigilantly on your behalf to conduct committee business, to achieve Federal Council consensus, and to deliver Green Party of Canada results. Make your voice heard loud and clear that you demand a Federal Councillor who will build on the legacy of those who served before us, and who will make the tough calls — the *right* calls — that will make your dreams of building a just and sustainable nation together come true. This Federal Council election is all about your choice of futures — and with your help and your support, your Alberta representative on your Green Party of Canada Federal Council will do the heavy labour behind the scenes that will transform their sacrifice and our inheritance into a Green Party of Canada where our members and our nation grow. Stronger. Together.
