My great grandfather was a sniper in a conflict known as WWI. He didnt brag about his service and certainly wouldnt write a book about his achievements. A few stories filtered down through my grandmother. He once told of an experience while clearing out a hamlet of other German snipers, a sniper duel, one of many. As it went, he and his partner approached and hid behind a log. As his partner looked over, his head simply disappeared by a direct hit and he had to go on alone. No official body counts or lofty awards were gained. He was wounded the last day of the war and gassed while trying to share his mask with another partner. He tried to reinlist for WWII in an attempt the take the place of a younger relative so that the young man would not have to experience it. Of course he was turned down and grew sick, a recuring problem from the gas. He passed away soon after during that conflict in bed reading letters from my grandmother who was complaining about how hard here life was, lol. No movie was made about him and he would have liked it that way. His glory came from the personal truth he carried. Our children are viewing conflict in games like it is some sort of rock and roll adventure. It sells.
