My heart broke at work today as I listened to one of my patients beg the doctors permission to get rid of her 14 year old cat. Her son had developed a mild allergy, and the poor girl had apparently worn out her welcome. This family raised the cat from a young kitten, and become tired of dealing with the struggles elderly cats face nearing the end of their lives. I am so glad that my allergist would not grant them the excuse, or even encourage the thought. It is so incredibly sad to think that a family would abandon their love for their pet, another family member, rather than embrace her old age and strive to incorporate her with love for the few years she has left. Old age is part of pet ownership. Please please, if you are not prepared to allow your love to conquer the challenges of old age..... it is better off that you wait until you can.
