My heart is heavy with news of the passing of one of the most influential mentors in my career, Lieutenant Jim Wheeless. The most valued lesson that he taught me, was to be proud of the career that I chose, which was becoming a jailer. He taught me to hold my head up high because I was much more than just a jailer. He told me I would make a difference in many lives, as they would mine. He was so right. I took that with me when I left Milam County, and do my best to instill that pride in jailers and officers that I work with. I greatly missed going to his office and being able to talk about anything, even if it was to for disciplinary reasons, I always felt comfortable, and always stepped out a better person, and jailer. I still miss that, as mentors like him are hard to come by these days. I never told him that when I left, but felt an overwhelming need to express to him my gratitude to him later. Im so glad God allowed me the time to tell him what I thought he so deserved to know. I dont know if it did him more good to hear that, or if it did me more good to tell him. His work on me will stay with me forever, and every night I walk through these jail halls, I hear his words.......Its just another day in paradise!!
