My high school chemistry teacher thought I shouldnt pursue science. He felt that even though I was among the top three or four kids in our advanced track chemistry class. Yes top three or four students out of a graduating class of over 500 kids. And I had been the top biology student the year before. Why? Because science wasnt a good field for girls. I kid you not. In 1983, a high school chemistry teacher discouraged me from pursuing science because I was a girl. In New York State. I am proud to be a role model to my female students. And my male students. It is, however, clear that the assumptions that girls cant do science have not gone. Occasionally, my capability and standing as a woman are challenged subtly or not so subtly. [But not for too long. ;) ]
