My humble husband Lance Leopold wont do it so I will tell you what he did yesterday. The fire at Rockleigh which destroyed a house and so much bush yesterday, and which came within metres of our daughter Rachel Spottiswoodes mother-in-laws house, also devastated the wildlife. So Lance and Rach drove out to the farm to see if they could help. Armed with boxes to rescue any injured animals, and water to give them, they spent hours in 40plus degree heat walking the burned property and saving many lives. They found lizards of many varieties, either dead or stunned by the heat. The dead ones they could not help but there were lots of them which, when given a drink of water (and a cherry tomato or two- as they love them) made a quick recovery and wandered off back into the bush. Liz, Rachel mother-in-law, unfortunately lost one of her beloved horses, and a second one has burns which are being treated. The chickens and guinea fowl survived, which is amazing as the fire came right up to their pen. As for native birds, Im not sure if they saw any but Lance can comment. Just want to say, well done Lance and Rach, awesome work yesterday. And awesome work too by my son-in-law James Spottiswoode who helped defend his mothers house and property by fighting the fire and carrying out some gruesome clean-up work afterwards.
