My kid brother once (2007) asked me if I think it would be okay - TopicsExpress

My kid brother once (2007) asked me if I think it would be okay for him to leave Nigeria. He just left school then and was struggling with getting a job. I didnt know what advice to give. He is quite brilliant (at least most of his pals call him Iwe, meaning book), but he is extremely slow. By slow I meant he is not street-wise, aggressive or a badass hustler. He later got a job with a bank. My advise became very easy. I simply told him to make the best of the circumstances, save aggressively and start making necessary investments in fixed assets. I told him car is not an asset. Strangely, he listened and was coasting. Then disaster struck about 2-3years later and he lost the job. He would have kept the job if he wasnt damn too slow. His operations manager was cutting deals and ordering him to suppress cheques (sometimes for 48-72hrs). He obeyed because he was dumb and slow. He didnt tell me on time. I had direct access to the ED of his bank. When he eventually opened up (disciplinary was already started) and told me, it was almost too late. The ED still helped us and he got a month suspension. The op manager was sacked. But it went into his file anyway. When the bank ran into troubled waters and needed to downsize, it was natural that his name will be up on the list. The ED already retired by then. I felt maybe I should have advised him to leave Nigeria? Now, when young folks approach me about leaving Nigeria, I dont know what advise to give. I have these two guys who have been hassling me for advise. Peeps, I need your help again for your input and advise. Two heads are better than one. Europe, including UK is crazy at the moment. There are really no job anywhere. Some people are desperate and believe anywhere else will be better than Nigeria. Student visas hardly go far again. You are not even allowed to work any decent hours (hardly enough to even meet your expenses). And you are forced to go back home once you complete your studies. It is hell when one gets stranded in the system. What and how should one advise such young folks? Life can be so confusing! We sometimes make one mistake that will require a lifetime to correct.
