My last posting with my column on women in power prompted lots of discussion and quite a bit of disagreement here on FB. A number of men in particular were dismayed, saying that my column accused Twitters board without evidence of discriminating against women, and that maybe it just so happened that the seven best people for the Twitter board were all white men. Two comments back. First, I dont think Twitter board members deliberately discriminated against men. I think they did look for the best people--through a narrow lens in which the best people for the board were people just like themselves, and diversity didnt count. Second, I cant help thinking that one measure of a sense of entitlement is that you are oblivious to your own sense of entitlement. I also want to make clear that Im using Twitter here as a proxy for society as a whole, and, as I note in the column, I recognize that my own world of opinion journalism is also overwhelmingly white and male. In short, Im trying to use Twitter to start a broader conversation.
