My last project here at the Colonel Charles Young National - TopicsExpress

My last project here at the Colonel Charles Young National Monument Site located here in the great Wilberforce, Ohio home of the Central State Marauders. #MarauderLand My name is John Vinson and I am a Junior ROTC cadet at Central State University. This summer HBCUI have given me the opportunity to work at the Colonel Charles Young National Monument site here in Wilberforce, Ohio. Working here at the Colonel Charles Young site has been an amazing opportunity with a great amount of knowledge that has been gained from my experience. Learning about Colonel Charles Young has given me a standard to exceed and a standard to hold as a ROTC cadet and future leader of the United States Army. Colonel Charles Young’s life is very inspirational for a young heart like mines. For instance, in the picture below, Colonel Charles Young had to write a paper as an entry into the military as a second lieutenant to show his competence level, not just written competence but also battle tactics competence. In this paper Colonel Charles Young brilliantly wrote a fifteen page paper about basic battle tactics of a small area and even wrote about a map drawn to a certain scale that could be used as a visual aid. Work like this shows me as a future officer of the United States Army I need to meet Charles Young’s potential and exceed what he have left behind as history and a guideline for others to follow. I’ve also taken from this experience that you cannot succeed in life on your own. You will need someone else to help you out, to show you the ropes, to give you guidelines or standards to follow or exceed. Saying this, I would like to introduce John H. Alexander. John H. Alexander is the second graduate from West Point Academy (Charles Young being the third graduate). John H. Alexander helped mentor Colonel Charles Young through his West Point career. Wilberforce, Ohio is the burial site for John H. Alexander, for he passed away while being stationed here at Wilberforce to teach a group of young student’s military exercises and battle practices (ROTC). Below is a picture of his burial site in which we had the opportunity to visit. There is really not much to say about this opportunity because words cannot explain the lessons and standards that I have now set for myself from this internship. I will tell you this though, when school begins in mid August I will begin my third year of ROTC as a new and better cadet. I will be working hard to exceed previous standards that myself, my peers, and my instructors had set for myself. Just exceeding the standard alone will not satisfy or prove anything to me or the future cadets in this amazing program. So as I begin to exceed this standard I will be showing the younger cadets how they can do anything when they actually try and put time and effort into their work. I will become a mentor to many and to many a reference they can always call and rely on when they need help. This internship has been more than amazing and you can be sure that in a couple of years I will be walking tall with my second lieutenant rank as Colonel Charles Young once did. May his legacy carry on with me and be passed down to every cadet from me until the end of time. Thank you for this wonderful life changing opportunity.
