My little brothers Disassociation letter: November 16, 2014 To the Local Elders and Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses Dear Elders, All of my life I have been plagued by constant doubt about the existence of God. This has caused quite a conflict in me because, on the one hand, I’m one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, and it is my duty to teach others about how Jehovah created the universe and everything in it, and that we all descended from a literal common human ancestor, Adam, and that we are all part of God’s grand purpose. On the other hand, science has shown us that this hypothesis is wrong. While religious people have been conditioned not to trust science’s answer regarding the origin of life, the evidence proves that life really did evolve over time without the involvement of any sort of creator or designer. Just like how science has been able to explain the gformation of rainbows, or why solar eclipses happen, or what causes earthquakes, science also can teach us how things really work. Understanding this helps us see that really the only purpose that a god serves is to explain the gaps in human understanding. (Please don’t think I’m purposefully trying to sound blasphemous. That is not my intention) but the very definition of faith requires acceptance of things for which there is no evidence, and when faith stands in the way of reason, that’s where I draw the line. Over the past ten years of my life, I have looked at what the Society’s publications say on these issues, and compared them with what actual facts and evidence show, and I have found that the Watchtower Society has repeatedly taken quotes from experts out of context, twisting them to obscure the true findings and uphold their doctrine. Further, there is no more proof for the existence of the Judeo-Christian god than there is for the existence of Zeuss, or Thor, or for fairies for that matter, so why shouldn’t I believe in those as well? “Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence and that what can be asserted without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence.” Furthermore, I don’t consider the Bible to be anything more than just a historical document written by a middle-eastern tribe that was looking for answers (and to their credit, it was the best explanation around at the time). For most of my life I thought I could simply hide these doubts and live a happy life pretending to believe in the Bible. I no longer think I can keep doing this. This has been causing me much distress. I can’t spend my whole life not being honest with myself and everyone else. My desire is to have a peaceful separation with this religion. It is not my goal to try to persuade any of you to question your belief in god. I simply want to make it clear that I don’t believe, and I have plenty of valid reasons not to. With that in mind, I want to express to you how much love I have for you and every member of the Christian Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses, as well as every member of the human family. This is not an easy letter to write, because the consequences of me questioning my beliefs can be heartbreaking, even life altering, for everyone involved. I know that my relationship with my family will never be the same, and if they remain steadfast in their beliefs, they’ll make it a priority not to talk to me anymore. However I can no longer in good conscience try to teach others a belief system that I do not believe in. I legally request to have any files with my name on them that connect me to Jehovah’s Witnesses and the Watchtower Society removed from any Kingdom Hall and branch office of Jehovah’s Witnesses and destroyed. I trust you’ll follow through on this request. Kindly,
