My mom always tells me to be careful on New Years Eve because as she sees it, its amateurs night. On MLK Jr Day I kind of feel the same... everyone comes out of the woodwork to be a champion for equality or diversity or whatever, then go back to their isolated routines. Of course, you gotta celebrate the occasion, because of the gravity of Dr. Kings contribution to the movement and this country. But whats the point if your commitment to his legacy lasts as long as your New Years Resolution to hit the gym? I was at the King Arts Complex today and the energy was amazing, but dont just put your MLK quotes in the back of your closet with your party dress like its NYE. We need to spend more time reflecting on our lives and thinking about how to be our most full selves, and we also need to get involved in our communities. We need to challenge racism and poverty every day. We need to think, love, and act all the time...plus the two are so interrelated. To me, being your full self is easiest when you are in community and taking action with others.
