“My mom has breast cancer.” This morning I said that for the first time to an old friend. My mother Shirley Ward and our family have been living with this for more than a month and some of her closest friends already know. The cancer was caught very early and the decisions about surgery and radiation will be decided in the next few days. My mom is the strongest and bravest woman I know. She has been the one to console my father who has taken it very hard. I know the percentages and the great procedures but frankly I’m scared to death. I scared for mom and dad, for my kind-hearted sister and for my wonderful niece and nephew. I have dealt with my own guilt too because I have selfishly thought about what I would do without my mother, that scares me even more. I don’t have any kids, a wife, a girlfriend or any prospects of any of them so my friends and family are all I have. I have felt very alone this last month and tried to be the very best son I could be. My mom works with me every day and has worked to make me a success. Everything that is good in me is because of her. I owe her more than any words I could say. I know a million families have gone through similar circumstances and I am thankful for their brave example. My mom is ready to get the process started and have a plan in place. She has repeatedly said that she has some political campaigns to run this year and people she really wants to beat. If there is a more Bad-Ass Republican than my mother, I don’t know who that would be. Please pray for my mom, our family and the people that love my mom and our family. Please pray for those in all of our lives that are suffering and especially those who are suffering in silence. Im thankful for so much. God is good, all the time.
