My mom told me years ago, Any man can father a child, but not - TopicsExpress

My mom told me years ago, Any man can father a child, but not every man can be a Daddy. I was probably 10 years old. Corey & I immediately went into the bedroom where my dad was sitting, hugged him, and repeated those words to him. I could tell how happy it made him. It was that moment that I realized how lucky we were. He is NOT my biological father, but Im not sure that I could love him any more if he was. A couple of years ago, at my brothers memorial service, I told everyone present that George White had NEVER called me (or Corey) his stepsons and how much that meant to us. One day, when we were kids, a man walked up to us and asked my dad, George, who are these two handsome young men? Without hesitation, dad replied, Well, ____, these are my sons! He stared at my much lighter toned, young dad for a second (as if waiting for a punchline.) After an awkward few seconds and no punchline, the man looked back at our little ashy asses and said, Well, they look JUST like you George! lol ....and Dad said, Why, thank you, ____! ...and we kept walking. Throughout the years we learned pretty much everything we needed to know about being men from him. Its not Fathers Day, but I would like to thank him for giving Corey and I a life we may never have gotten. It means more to us than you could know. I would also like to thank him for giving me my younger brothers, Gregory A. White , David White, Trevon White, & our sister, Katherine Georgette White. I love you. And Im so proud of you knuckleheads. Just like most people I know, ours is a complicated family. Just because a marriage doesnt work out and children get caught in the middle, doesnt mean they have to miss out. We didnt. We feel loved by ALL branches of our family. It is not just important for me that they know that .......but most importantly for my brother Corey (who cannot say it now...but I know felt the same), my mother, Brenda White, my children, my nephews and nieces, sisters, and my brothers. Thanks for reading, -Dondi
