My mother-in-law is a retired minister. She called tonight. - TopicsExpress

My mother-in-law is a retired minister. She called tonight. Since my wife was working on her laptop I jumped on the hand-grenade and took the call. Spent two hours presenting rationality, logic, reason, and empirical arguments explaining why no religion is sane and why atheism, being without a god-yap in ones head, is preferable to being crazy and turning away from reality. How nothing advocating pretending over fact is productive, useful, or in any way a good idea. And so on. Wasted hours, of course. Wasted words, breath, and effort. Too harsh? I asked my wife, who is worse than me about tolerating religion or god yap. Yes, she said, seeing an opening and taking it. How so? You agreed with every syllable I said. But shes just an old lady. True, but she pulled every predictable ploy and limp argument trick in the book on me and I dismissed them all and retorted with citations and backed-up fact. I was feeling like Christopher Hichens, Richard Dawkins, and George Carlin rolled into one. You didnt change her mind. My wife turned back to her laptop. I went back to reading Flicker by Theodore Roszak, thinking I should have cited Mans Search for Meaning by Frankl and Beckers The Denial of Death. Twenty minutes later both sons who no longer live with us dropped by. / Life aboard Sloop Stewart.
