My mourning dove with the broken wing. I found her in my garden - TopicsExpress

My mourning dove with the broken wing. I found her in my garden unable to fly. I put her in a type of aquarium and darkened all but, one side as not to traumatize her further. The next day she laid an egg. So she must have been harmed protecting her nest. Possibly a squirrel had attacked her. Asked for help as to how to wrap the wing. Here in Canada it is illegal to keep captive a wild bird but, I could find no vet to help me. Each told me they would be risking their license to do so. I too was risking my Paralegal license by breaking the law. I managed to wrap the wing but, not very well. It did not heal as it should have but, after having her for over two months I had her sitting on a towel on the back of the sofa so she could look out the window. I had expected I would have to keep her as she could not fly. I already had 10 birds at that point including a Macaw. None of the birds bothered her and she had no interest in them. I lay down and fell asleep on the sofa. I coughed and startled her and she flew across the room. It was then I knew in spite of the wing not being perfect she could be released and keep herself out of harms way. It was a bitter sweet parting but, took her to the back of the property tossed her into the air with lots of tears and she flew to a branch. Her mate had been coooing for her for some time and my greatest hope is that they were able to find each other again. I went back a 1/2 hour later and she was gone. Mourning doves are the sweetest of birds. I grew to love her so much. Now when I hear their coos I wonder and always think of her. It has been 6 years now but, I think of her so often.
