My name is Kelly Vaughan and I am running to be a parent representative on Sutherland’s Local School Council. During the two years that my children (1st grade and 3rd grade) have attended Sutherland, I have volunteered for class projects and field trips, served on the PTA Board, and arranged an epilepsy awareness workshop for the staff. I have also been involved in city wide campaigns for education justice. I hope to bring my experiences as a parent and an educator to the LSC. I have earned a master’s degree and a PhD in the field of curriculum and instruction. I have experience as a CPS high school teacher, a university instructor, and a research specialist. If elected, I will work to unify our school community, emphasize transparency and communication, and increase parental involvement in decision making. I am particularly interested in addressing: services and support for students with special needs; authentic teaching and learning during a time of increased standardization and testing; and the need to promote the joy of learning for all students. I will do my best to contribute to a positive school community that serves and supports all students.
