My naval career began at the close of the Vietnam War, at the height of the Cold War, when I worked very closely with Her Royal Highness, the Princess of Wales. Our assignments spanned the globe, on all continents, in every sphere, diplomatic and military, in every major subsequent conflict. On January 20, 1989, I was also appointed to the post of Director of National Security under President George H. Bush, a confidential post I held under each successive President, until the Spring of 2013. As Director of National Security, I served at the pleasure of the President as sole direct agent of the President, exercising his powers of attorney, in his capacity as head of state, chief executive, and commander-in-chief. My responsibilities included policy, strategy, tactics, and logistics; and command, control, control, coordination, and communication functions; spanning the Departments of State, Defense, Justice, and Treasury, among others; in nearly all important questions and conflicts of the period of my service, including my period of service as Prime Minister, in which I served in an advisory capacity. My appointment was confirmed by the United States Senate under review of the United States Supreme Court, but I was never a constitutional officer of the United States government. I resigned this post for security reasons.
