My newspaper career was a dozen years behind me, but a couple of years ago I dreamed I was covering the Kentucky Derby, something Id done dozens times in the past. In this dream I had run out of film and was running around asking fellow photographers for an extra roll of 35mm Tri-X. No one had any. The call to the post for the running of the roses was blaring over the loud speaker as i was running to the Nikon photo tent to see if they could help. No luck. How was I going to photograph the race ??? I saw a Kodak photo kiosk and made a mad dash through the crowd yelling and screaming to no avail. All I could hear was... THEYRE OFF !!! The crowd rush to the fence knocking me, my three cameras and two gadget bags with the umbrella and mono-pod attached to the ground. I recall covering my head and then waking up exhausted and in a sweat. Dont recall many of my dreams/nightmares, but this one has stayed the course. The other was at Lake Erie as a teenager (mid-50s). I was flying (asto traveling) along the shore between Ashtabula and Conneaut, Ohio. I could see myself on the beach fast asleep. There was a rude awakening when a bucket of water was tossed on me and landed with a thud. I didnt see it coming. Plans to become an USAF pilot creeped into the back of my mind. Someone tossed water on that too. Dreams are funny that way.
